Can it get much better?

"I don't think it can" said tournament director Bob Glover.  "We had two days of nice weather offshore and the fishing was exceptional.  I think everyone had a really great time!  Every category got filled except for Heaviest Blue which was surprising. We normally get one in the upper 200's or 300's.  There just weren't any keepers.  There were plenty of 100 - 200 pounders released, which certainly exemplifies the conservation approach to this event by our anglers. They did a great job!
Plenty of makos were let go as well with several 200-300 pounders making the board. The "Pirasea" took the top spot on Saturday with their 305 pounder and it held to the end. Three 400 pound plus threshers ruled that category with the largest being caught aboard the Reel Desire III on Friday. Their fish weighed an impressive 490 lbs.
I want to thank all of our participants, sponsors and staff for making our 30th Annual Shark Tournament such a great time. I thought everyone was upbeat and anticipating a fun and exciting event. I think they got what they came for!"

144 Boats Fishing for First Place

A packed Captains meeting ended at 8:30 last night with 144 boats registered and 700 plus anglers itching to get offshore this morning to take their shot at winning a piece of the $288,410 in prize money.  Tournament director Bob Glover said he was pleased with the turn out and the excitement that eminated from the crowd. "There is definitely an abundance of enthusiasm with this group. It was a cold winter in the northeast, but now the weather is just right, the fish are here and everyone is excited.  Everyone is in a positive mood. This is going to be a fun event!"

New Jersey Shark Season

We know there has been much chatter in the newspapers and on the boards about a potential shark moratorium in New Jersey. The feds and the state have just reached an agreement.

Rick Weber has spoken to both NMFS and New Jersey. We WILL be having a modified shark season in NJ and it WILL allow most recreational fisherman and tournaments to have a fairly normal season.

The agreement is this -

There will be a prohibition on "Large Coastal Sharks" effective May 15th. The "Large Coastal Sharks" group includes - black tip, silky, spinner, bull, tiger, lemon, nurse, scalloped hammerhead, great hammerhead, and smooth hammerhead

There will be a prohibition on "Pelagic Sharks" effective on July 30th, unless New Jersey is in full compliance by that date. The "Pelagic" group includes - shortfin mako, porbeagle, thresher, oceanic whitetip, and blue shark

The federal "Prohibited Species" list is extended to include state waters. The "Prohibited Species" - Atlantic angel, Basking, Bigeye sand tiger, Bigeye sixgill, Bigeye thresher, Bignose, Bluntnose sixgill, Reef, Caribbean sharpnose, Dusky, Galapagos, Longfin mako, Narrowtooth, Night, Sand Tiger, Sandbar, Sharpnose sevengill, Smalltail, Whale and White.

What all this means is that recreational anglers will still have the main targets of Makos, Blues, and Threshers available during the June and July fishing season. We have occasionally seen Tiger, Bulls, and Hammerheads at the tournaments. They will, of course, be ineligible for prizes this year.

2010 Shark Preview, June 10-13

Just ask any shark fisherman and he’ll tell you that South Jersey’s annual Shark Tournament is the largest and most lucrative shark tournament around. To put it another way, it is THE standard for Mid-Atlantic shark fishing. In 2010, South Jersey Tournaments will celebrate the 30th anniversary of this perennial favorite, and nobody on the planet knows how to celebrate a fishing tournament like South Jersey.

2009 Shark Tournament... All about Sportsmanship

DSC_6243

South Jersey’s 29th Annual Shark Tournament attracted 144 boats, and with $298,670 in total prize money and 589 fish caught, nobody went home disappointed. But the real story this year was less about the number and size of the shark brought in to Weighmaster Chris Booth, rather it was about the sportsmanship displayed by the participants.

Stories! Better yet, Fish Stories! We’ve all heard ‘em, and maybe we’ve told a few ourselves. How about the story of the crew aboard Paul Rys’s Hot Works who got their BIG bite late in the day on Day One. The thresher was so big, and the crew struggled so long to get it into the boat that they blew right through the scale closing deadline of 7:30 and missed weighing what would have been the biggest fish of the tournament by 41 pounds. Like all really good fish stories, this one does have a happy ending. An application has been filed with the State of New Jersey that should put the Hot Works and her crew into the State record books.
